We are thrilled to announce that Vivace! will have its New York premiere as part of the 2013 Columbia University Film Festival at Lincoln Center.

We are equally thrilled to announce that it will have its Los Angeles premiere a few weeks later as part of the 2013 LA Comedy Festival.

We hope to see you at the screenings!

SWEEPER’S GIRL

THREE FIGURES.  Emma, A YOUNG WOMAN WITH HAUNTED EYES.  The Red Man, face obscured by a huge mask.  The smoke, formless.  Emma stands.

I have to tell you something, something you will forget

He won’t let you remember, yet

He’s probably watching

He always sees

Even when I don’t recall; praying or forgetting, he sees it all

I’m howling on my knees

The Red Man stands.

I hear writing

Nails scratch on chalkboard

The folk that fault me

Don’t know how I loved that boy

Come

Come he would say in his gruff gray voice

And I did come

There was no shame in our touch

Swept away by the lingering night

never waking, the merest whisper of my name, I’d run to him

The smoke speaks in many voices, overlapping.

Chant, chant the wicked world, chant the wicked

I was two I wouldn’t care to eat

One knew the other, the other knew nothing

He my protector, I his muse

That relationship of equitable misuse From that same table

Now I have nothing Scent of meat, faintly rotting

No boat, serene on the water

No lap of waves

Mumbling prayers in the naves Clots my nostrils up like glue

Boil, roil and boil the stew, spew it, chew it

Fool, the fool, fly, fly fool, you knew it It wasn’t …

I’m not.

A brief silence.  Emma laughs.

Thanks for that.  My peaceful moment in the wreckage. I hear …

My brief moment.

Emma puts her head in her hands.

Oh, God, where are they? The wicked world.

They come from nowhere, beseeching Clots my nostrils up.

That squealing howling chorus, entreating come …

Come to life, come to madness, come to Hell with us, come Dance, the wicked

As once I came, as I once came Dance, Clot, Dance.

but then would not, to him.

Is this your vengeance, sweeper, father, teacher?

Because I could not listen anymore?

Because I did not seem to glisten, in your eyes, as pearls glisten?

The folk that fault, fault me. Wicked. The boy I don’t know. Fool. Scratch the boy. Stew. Scratch the boy. Spew.

Emma speaks calmly.

Stop.  Say one more thing and I’ll scream.  I will.

Sometimes they listen.

I have to go to bed, I have to rest

my head, and neck, and shoulders ache with the pain of a thousand lifetimes.

I have to sleep among the flotsam and detritus

because I would no longer come as he wanted me to.  Wicked.

Come to me he’d say. Clot, boy.

Dance with me, girl. Boil.

Scream me to sleep, girl. Nails, meat.

All, in harmony for a brief moment.

I have to tell you.

THE END

My lovely friends at LTC, Jenson Smith and Cathleen Carr, star in this new LTC sketch; camera, edit and some writing are mine. I think it’s our funniest so far, but then again, my sense of humor is warped.

I’m happy to announce that my spec script “Modern Family: Off Dance” won second place at this year’s Scriptapalooza TV competition. Congratulations to all of the other winners, and thanks to the folks at Scriptapalooza. I love you all too!

Well, my friends and neighbors, here it is … my labor of love for the last few months.  It nearly killed us, but the director and I produced the film and shot it over just twelve days. I also edited the trailer but I won’t be editing the film itself. I’m so excited about the finished product!

hey ben,
i saw your website and wanted to respond. i graduated from chapman in may with an MFA in cinematography. i’ve been in LA since november, but am probably going to move to NY in august as it seems to be a better balance of what i’m looking for.
i’m curious as to what the filmmaking climate is like there and the sort of independent filmmaking opportunities that are available to starting filmmakers such as ourselves.

Hi I.;
Thanks for emailing.  Nice reel, by the way.
The filmmaking climate in New York is less active than that of Los Angeles, but it’s still the second biggest in the United States.  There is a little work in television and a few big productions crew up here, particularly for lower-end positions, but as a cinematographer, the majority of your work will wind up being in student films, web exclusives, events, and if you’re lucky, indie features.
Owning your own equipment makes it much easier to get hired in New York.  Being flexible about crew and job titles helps too.  Sometimes you’ll have an army behind you, sometimes you are the army.
Build up relationships with good ACs and crew.  It helps you become faster and more desirable as a hire if you can solve many problems.
I suggest diversifying the range of things you can do on a production, even as a DP.  Getting credits as a producer or an AD will show indie filmmakers that you know how to run a set and can keep to a schedule (even though your directors won’t).
But ultimately, when I look to hire a DP, the quality of the reel is paramount.  And if I can make a suggestion, you should cut your sizzle to 15-30 seconds and add links to completed projects and full-length scenes.  A website would also add credibility.
Best of luck,
Ben

I’m excited to share with all of you the brand-new feature film I’m producing, “The Skinny“.  We shoot in June.  This is a big deal for me, so I hope anyone who can contribute will consider doing so.
